How to use Vi editor quickly without going through the entire user manual?

I will show you how to immediately use the vi editor the quick way. Just the essentials. Read on...

First download putty software, you can just google for putty and then download it.

You can download the first download link. 

Now that you have putty. This is a client software where you can use it to access your unix server (E.g. HPUX, Solaris, Linux, etc).

Now the quick steps on how to use the Vi editor

1) putty into your Unix server by entering your server's IP address into putty

2) Next cd to the directory where your file is stored.

3) If you need to edit the password file. You can enter this vi /etc/passwd

4) If you need to edit line 2 in your password file, then type "shift + R" this is used to replace the text you want to replace

5) Click on the "ESC" key to stop editing

6) Click on "X" key to delete

7) If you want to move from one line to other line, then press the "ESC" key again

5) Once finish editing your password file or other files then type ":wq!" without the double quotes to save
