How does a small datacenter or server room look like? If you are new to administrating a datacenter or a small sized server room. You can take a look at this video on how does a server room looks like. Not all server room will look the same. But typically this is how a server room will look like. Take note on how their servers are labelled on their KVM switches. KVM switches are used to connect multiple servers to one monitor so that you dont have to use one monitor to one server. And you can toggle among the servers by pressing buttons. This is a important space and rack space saving feature. Another important feature is the cable color coding. When you or your vendor are putting or setting up the cables. Do remind and discuss with them the cables' color codes. For example which color cables are for which type of usage (E.g. Server cables = Red, telephone cables = yellow, etc) Last but not least, take note on the different types of servers in the datacenter (E.g. Email server, file server, etc), UPS devices, these are also needed in case there is a power outrage or power loss. If there is a power cut then the UPS will kick in to support the server and perform a safe shutdown. This will prevent the server being shutdown suddently and also to prevent corruption to the servers' OS (Operating Systems). The air circulation is also very important. In a good server room there will be cool alley and hot alley. Where the hot air can be remove by ventilation vets in the ceiling. This ventilation will cool down the datacenter by approximately 5 to 10'c
The cool air should come from the rised floor, and goes up to individual racks via the openings at the rised floor. The cool alley are infront of the racks and the hot alleys are at the back of the racks.
