How to setup a VNC server for a beginner

What is a VNC server? You might ask. The VNC server and client is a remote access software, which you can install it in your users' pc and laptop. And when they need IT support from you. You can login to their pc or laptop remotely and do not have to walk all the way to their office in the next building or a different level.

Following is a diagram to illustrate:-

Your Laptop  -------------------------------------------> User's Laptop

Install VNC Client                                        Install VNC Server here

                                                               Set password here

                                                               Get user's IP address to remote in

Once you are able to remote into your user's laptop with their IP address or hostname. You will be able to see their desktop and start troubleshooting your user's IT issue or start to help your user configure their laptop applications.

Recommended VNC softwares to use

1) ESVNC (Vnc application with ftp function)

2) TightVNC

Done, you can also use PC Anywhere to dial into your user's PC or laptop, but you will need a license for this

Another way is to use Windows terminal services (RDP: port 3389), Windows remote access function. At any one time the default remote access session is limited to 2 sessions. You can buy more licenses from Microsoft if you need more access session per one time. E.g. A important application is installed into a terminal server which more than 2 persons need to login to access concurrently.
